Third Degree Burnout- A Survivors Guide
An Impact Campaign by The Virsa Foundation Inc.
Third Degree Burnout – A Survivor’s Guide is a multi-award-winning independent documentary exploring the hidden drivers of personal and planetary burnout — and the role modern food systems play in both accelerating and healing it.
Produced by The Virsa Foundation Inc. and its JIVINITI Research & Advocacy Program, the film brings together leading experts, lived experience, and findings from The GAIA Study — one of the largest nonprofit studies conducted during the pandemic examining diet patterns, stress, and resilience among 14,626 Americans.
The film reframes burnout not as a personal failure, but as a systemic condition shaped by culture, economics, food environments, and environmental stressors. It offers a hopeful, evidence-informed lens for recovery — at both the individual and institutional level.
Now entering its 2026 Year of Impact, the campaign is designed to activate the film beyond the festival circuit and into meaningful public engagement.
THE IMPACT VISION
Burnout is often siloed as a workplace or mental health issue. This project positions it as a broader systems challenge at the intersection of:
- Health and lifestyle
- Food systems
- Education
- Climate and community wellbeing
The Impact Campaign will focus on engaging three primary audiences: academic, clinical, and culinary communities — spaces where systems change and cultural norms are shaped.
ACADEMIC ENGAGEMENT
The campaign aims to introduce the film into universities and educational institutions as a catalyst for interdisciplinary dialogue.
Through campus screenings, faculty partnerships, and structured conversations, the project seeks to engage students and educators across public health, nutrition, environmental studies, behavioral science, and communications — encouraging systems thinking around burnout and resilience.
CLINICAL ENGAGEMENT
Burnout is deeply felt within the healthcare profession.
The campaign will explore partnerships with clinical and professional communities to support conversations about prevention, resilience, and upstream drivers of stress. By bridging research, lived experience, and practical application, the film offers clinicians a broader lens on the interconnected nature of stress physiology, lifestyle, and community health.
CULINARY ENGAGEMENT
Food is one of the most tangible entry points into systems change.
The campaign intends to engage culinary leaders, educators, and hospitality communities in dialogue about how food environments influence wellbeing. By bringing the film into kitchens and culinary institutions, the project aims to connect storytelling with everyday choices that shape both personal and planetary health.
WHY THIS MOMENT MATTERS
Burnout rates continue to rise across generations. Climate anxiety is growing. Healthcare systems are strained. Chronic disease remains prevalent.
Yet these conversations are rarely connected.
Third Degree Burnout – A Survivor’s Guide invites a more integrated understanding — one that connects food, stress, environment, and culture into a coherent narrative of possibility.
HOW SUPPORT WILL BE USED
Funds raised through Filmmakers Collaborative will support the strategic development and implementation of the Impact Campaign, including outreach, partnerships, educational resources, and coordinated engagement efforts across target communities.
This phase represents a critical transition from festival recognition to long-term public impact.
This is more than a film.
It is a platform for dialogue, education, and systems-level reflection.
With thoughtful activation, Third Degree Burnout can serve as a catalyst for institutions and communities seeking to move from awareness to action — and from exhaustion to resilience.
