Magic today takes many shapes. Exploring how traditional magic has moved into the digital world, this course on filmmaking and practical magic is a study in the art of astonishment. Using cards, invisible thread, and editing effects, students will create films showcasing magic illusions.

Previous experience in either filmmaking or magic is welcomed, but not required.

A Partner Event Sponsored by:

FILMMAKERS COLLABORATIVE along with
LEF FOUNDATION and THE CENTER FOR INDEPENDENT DOCUMENTARY

If you were able to join us on June 14, 2017 for the “Demystifying Tax Credits” Seminar, you were given an overview of exactly what these credits are, how they are used and how to qualify.

We know that:

  • Minimum qualified spending is only $50K!
  • Features, Documentaries and multiple episode series all qualify!
  • Credits are transferable ( meaning you can borrow against them, use them or sell them)!
  • BUT….

If you were left thinking “Yes, but how do I apply?”, this workshop is for you!

Please join us on Tuesday, Sept. 19, as we take you step-by-step through the entire process – from how to register with the State, through filing for the appropriate tax credit, to ways to finance your film through the tax credits.

It’s free of charge, but space is limited.   Sign up now !

On hand again will be Wendy Riseborough, a Producer and Project Manager for Independent filmmakers who has applied for and received tax credits over 20 times in her career. Wendy has seen it all and lucky for us is willing to share her stories of success and challenges along the way.

Wendy Riseborough | Producer & Project Manager

Wendy Riseborough is a producer and project manager of award winning documentaries, feature films, and cable series. For the last 11 years she has held producing titles at Vital Pictures in Boston, where she develops new public broadcasting documentaries, oversees productions, and day-to-day operations. She has worked to successfully secure tax credits for numerous independent documentaries for broadcast, episodic, and digital media projects. Her newest production, 'Coming of Age in Aging America', will air on the PBS World Channel in late June 2017.

If you have specific questions regarding your project that you would like answered at the workshop, please feel free to share them ahead of time with laura@filmmakerscollab.org and we will try to address everyone’s needs.

Join Globe Docs and Filmmakers Collaborative for a film screening of CELLING YOUR SOUL on September 27th at 7PM at the Coolidge Corner Theatre.

In one short decade, we have totally changed the way we interact with one another. The millennial generation, the first to be socialized in a digital world, is now feeling the unintended consequences.

CELLING YOUR SOUL is a powerful and informative examination of how our young people actually feel about connecting in the digital world and their love/hate relationship with technology. It provides empowering strategies for more fulfilling, balanced, and authentic human interaction within the digital landscape.

The film reveals the effects of "digital socialization" by taking viewers on a personal journey with a group of high school and college students who through a digital cleanse discover the power of authentic human connectivity, and that there is "No App" or piece of technology that can ever replace the benefits of human connection.

The screening will be immediately followed by a panel with Producer Joni Siani.

Moderated by The Boston Globe's Janice Page

It's Criminal highlights the economic and social inequities that divide the United States and offers a vision of how separated communities can learn to speak to each other.

Poignant and personal, the 80-minute feature documentary shares the life-changing journeys of incarcerated women and Dartmouth College students working together to write and perform an original play that explores the often painful and troubled paths that landed the women behind bars and also shares some of their fragile visions for the future.

It's a transformational movie that delves into privilege, poverty and injustice and asks viewers to think about who is in prison and why. In addition to exploring disparities, It's Criminal also captures how the students and prisoners struggle and ultimately succeed in overcoming their fears and prejudices to form hard won bonds of friendship, showing that empathy is a powerful force that can help bridge the divide.

Following the film, there will be a Q&A Producer & Director, Signe Taylor, moderated by The Boston Globe's Janice Page.

APRIL 5 - 8, 2018
Provincetown, MA

The Women’s Media Summit includes movie-makers, academics, lawmakers, business professionals and supporters to build strategies that end gender inequity in American film and television.

The Summit documents gender disparities in media. Although 50% of film school graduates are women only 7% of the 250 top-grossing American films in 2016 were directed by women.

Few women hold power positions in film or television; women protagonists are under-represented; and female characters seen in Hollywood films are often stereotyped. In pursuit of gender equality, in 2017 the Summit identified seven ways to end discrimination, and the Women’s Media Action Coalition (WeMAC) was created to implement action plans.

The 2018 Summit will focus on these action plans created last year to fight employment discrimination in Hollywood.

Produced by Filmmakers Collaborative member Roger Lyons

ETCHED IN GLASS: The Legacy of Steve Ross

This is not your typical Holocaust survivor story. It’s the real-life account of how one remarkable Polish man found a second life in America, dedicating himself to helping people. It’s the story of Steve Ross, who rose up from 5 horrific years in 10 concentration camps as a child and spent the rest of his life in the service of his adopted country, while searching for the American soldier who helped free him from “the gates of hell”.Steve and others tell us about his miraculous survival and his emigration to the United States, where he settled in the Boston area. We’ll introduce you to his first and oldest friend in America, now a retired surgeon, and find out how Steve coped with his first taste of American life.

We’ll trace his transformation from timid orphan to gutsy street worker to licensed psychologist. We’ll learn how Steve changed lives over and over again, by getting kids off the streets, away from crime and into the classroom. We’ll meet a man who was saved by Steve from a life of crime, prodded to get an education and became a successful attorney, who feels he owes his life to his mentor. Steve himself steadfastly worked his way through college to earn 3 degrees, so he could be an advocate and advisor to young, at-risk people who needed help most, and did so for over 40 years.

Perhaps, Steve’s most enduring accomplishment was the founding of the New England Holocaust Memorial. We’ll show you how it came about with the aid of former Boston Mayor Ray Flynn and led by the tenaciousness of Steve Ross. Despite initial opposition, the now-iconic memorial stands on Boston’s Freedom Trail to educate and enlighten thousands of visitors each week.

The film culminates in the emotional Veterans’ Day ceremony at Boston’s State House on November 11, 2012. Steve finally meets the family of the soldier who liberated him from Dachau after a 67-year search, thanks to an episode of “Unsolved Mysteries” found on You Tube by the granddaughter of the soldier.

“Etched in Glass: The Legacy of Steve Ross” is an amazing story of the union of 2 families, brought together by the good deed of a soldier who showed kindness to a teenage boy near death. This film is the story of survival, perseverance and hope.

When Filmmakers Collaborative created the Boston International Kids Film Festival in 2013, it was with a goal of providing a weekend of family-friendly films to the Greater Boston community.

In a city that provides ample opportunities for adults to watch independently-made feature films and documentaries, there was nothing geared specfically towards middle-school aged children. We wanted to change that. By screening lms from around the globe, both professionally and student-made, we hope to inspire young people to tell their stories and share them with the world.

Combine that with special blocks of films geared towards children under 10-years-old and hands- on workshops for the entire family, and you are in for an event that families will be enjoying for years to come!

FC member Debbie Wright was working in the pharmaceutical industry in Pennsylvania when the reality of modern-day slavery in America hit very close to home.  The FBI descended upon her neighbor's house, finding thousands of pornographic images, many of which were of children being brutalized and raped. Debbie simply could not stand by and do nothing.  Her passion to raise awareness about trafficking and slavery lead her to the completion of her FIRST feature-length documentary, From Liberty to Captivity.

With Filmmakers Collaborative as a fiscal sponsor—and with no prior fundraising experience—Debbie managed to raise close to $550,000 in individual donations and $120,000 from foundations to producer her film. She is considering various distribution options and is now traveling around with her film as she continues to raise additional funding.

Debbie will present a workshop on how she went from went from a passionate idea to a successful fundraising/filmmaking adventure

From Liberty to Captivity explores Pennsylvania’s booming and profitable sex trafficking industry threatening to destroy the very principle of “liberty and justice for all.”  This feature-length documentary reveals the reality and complexities of sex trafficking crimes and social justice issues, and plants the seeds of hope of conquering it.  Using Interviews with victims, historians, experts and archival footage, the film takes us on a journey through Pennsylvania's rich history from the Underground Railroad to today's problem of modern-day slavery.

Meet Debbie Wright, a first-time filmmaker who left her job in the pharmaceutical industry when the reality of modern-day slavery hit close to home. It ignited a passion to raise awareness of the problem and led to the production of her first feature length documentary.

The Boston International Kids Film Festival highlights the talent of independent filmmakers everywhere while inspiring young people to share their own stories with the world.

By screening amazing student-made films from around the world while at the same time offering young people a look at professionally-made films created just for them, we are enabling the next generation of filmmakers to realize the power and potential of media.

The young filmmakers that participate in FC Academy, our after-school and summer filmmaking program, are also given center stage at special blocks throughout the weekend, as we screen the short films that they have created in our program in front of their family and friends.

Combine all that with hands-on workshops on stop-motion animation, storyboarding and filmmakers meetups and you are in for an event that families of Greater Boston will be enjoying for years to come!
