Biography
Esther Julie-Anne Shubinski is a Franco-American Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaker based in Los Angeles. She is Mohican (Muh-he-con-ne-ok, “People of the waters that are never still”) and enrolled in the Mohican Nation Stockbridge-Munsee Community. Esther edited the YouTube Originals series Defying Gravity: The Untold Story of Women’s Gymnastics, which won the Producers Guild of America Award for Outstanding Sports Program and was nominated for a Sports Emmy Award for Outstanding Edited Sports Series. Esther also edited Amanda Gorman’s Poetry Masterclass, which was nominated for an Emmy Award.
Most recently, she edited The Palomino, a feature documentary about California country music. The film premiered at the Nashville Country Music Hall of Fame and the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles. Other work includes Justice, directed by Doug Liman, which premiered at Sundance; The Return, which premiered at DOC NYC and won the Documentary Short Grand Jury Award at The Seattle Asian American Film Festival; Petit Rat won Best Documentary at the Miami Jewish Film Festival and was broadcast on PBS; Women in the Front Seat won Best Feature Documentary at the California Women’s Film Festival.
Esther also edited Alethea Avramis’ documentary Sundays (Thessaloniki Documentary Festival) and The Art of Observing Life (IDFA), a documentary by her mentor and veteran Russian filmmaker Marina Goldovskaya. Esther directed and edited the documentaries Out of Love, and Una Chanza Más, which both premiered at the Telluride Film Festival. Esther collaborated with Grammy-Award-winning composer Aaron Jay Kernis on Elegy, a short memorial documentary honoring the lives of those we lost during the pandemic. Esther received her BA from UC Berkeley and holds an MFA in Film Production & Directing at UCLA, where she also taught Documentary Production. Esther’s sensitivity and approach to storytelling are shaped by her French and Mohican roots. She strives to tell personal stories that can create more empathy in the world.
