Radha Learns To Swing
A film by Palak Joshi
Radha is a mother, wife, daughter, homemaker, leader, entrepreneur—and an Indian immigrant trying to keep all the pieces of her life in motion. But somewhere between putting the kids to bed and setting alarms for 6:00, 6:15, and 6:30 AM, she begins to wonder: Is that all there is to her?
When dropping her daughter Athira off at school in a saree, Radha finds herself on the receiving end of a classmate’s stare and his mother’s thinly veiled racism. Flustered, she blurts out that she’s a professional dancer—and, before she can reconsider, volunteers herself and Athira for the school’s annual summer talent show.
With just three weeks to make good on her lie, Radha turns to the one dance that feels like her own: swing. She signs up for lessons with Patrick (not Swayze, but also, yes, Swayze) and throws herself into a world of spinning feet, flailing arms, and unexpected possibilities. Athira, meanwhile, is less than thrilled about being dragged into her mother’s latest adventure.
As the performance approaches, Radha begins to unravel the many versions of womanhood she has tucked away beneath her labels and responsibilities. What starts as a desperate attempt to save face becomes a search for the parts of herself she can barely name, let alone explain.
Radha’s Time to Swing is a warm, funny, and tender story about a woman rediscovering the freedom to take up space, move to her own rhythm, and embrace the multitudes within her. Because who we are cannot always be captured by the roles we play. Sometimes, life is less about finding the right answer and more about surrendering to the dance.
