Films

90 MILES (2001)

Role: Director

In 90 MILES, Cuban-American filmmaker Juan Carlos Zaldivar, recounts the strange twist of fate that propelled his family to risk their lives across one of the world’s most treacherous stretches of water.

90 MILES (90 MILLAS) serves as a microcosm to the legacy of the historical conflict between the U.S. and Cuba, but its story echoes wherever there has been conflict around the world.

90 MILES (90 MILLAS) is Zaldivar’s quest to piece together the twists–and consequences–of his family’s journey into exile. Zaldivar’s dramatic shift in ideology (he was once a 13-year-old loyalist of the Cuban Revolution) is traced with surprising balance and poise, allowing the film to withstand the test of time. Above all, the film is a search for understanding and healing between father and son by uncovering the emotional distance opened by the 90 miles of water between Cuba and the U.S.

90 MILES (90 MILLAS) illuminates the psychological ramifications of immigration within our personal identities and in the psyche of Americans.
