John Dowalo has always had a creative spirit. As a child in southwest Pennsylvania, he wrote and performed short stories for his mom under the dining room table and spent Saturday afternoons at the local movie theater fascinated with how stories came to life.

In school, John excelled in science and math and, with his father’s encouragement, pursued studies in engineering graduating from the University of Dayton with undergraduate and graduate degrees in electrical engineering. His work in the defense industry spanned 45 years starting in Ohio and ending in California.

Throughout his distinguished career, however, John never lost his fascination with film and the entertainment industry. Evening and weekends were spent earning a certificate from UC Santa Barbara in graphic design and visual communications. It led to his first major “gig” working nights and weekends for JC Backings performing color correction, photo retouch and compositing on feature film backdrops. John’s major film credits in this role included Warner Bros. “The Perfect Storm”, DreamWorks SKG “What Lies beneath”, New Line Cinema “15 Minutes” and an Independent film titled “Under Suspicion”. At the same time, he completed courses at UCLA and Cal State University in filmmaking and editing and recently completed an online Masters Class with Ron Howard on directing.

After many years of reflection, John retired and made the decision to pursue his lifelong passion to be a filmmaker. He created his production company, Inspired Filmworks; he wrote, produced and directed four short films over five years including most recently “The Prototype,” selected and shown at Ojai, Sutter Creek International, Backyard Shorts and Copa Shorts Film Festivals.

John continues to study and learn from each film—the highs and lows—dedicated even more to making quality films for all ages telling stories that move, entertain and inspire.
