Film Talks

INTRODUCTION -

Film Talks brings award-winning filmmakers and their films to diverse venues throughout Greater Boston, to screen their work and lead discussions about the issues and ideas represented in their films and their filmmaking choices. The goal of the program is to use the power of film to stimulate dialogue about issues and the process of filmmaking itself.

We are especially committed to reaching underserved audiences that might not otherwise have the opportunity to see high quality films and to speak directly with accomplished filmmakers about their work and the issues about which they are passionate and knowledgeable.

Through Film Talks we’ve brought over 125 presentations to a wide variety of audiences ranging from 20-100 people. The demographics of our audiences range from youth to senior citizens and span as many ethnic groups and income levels as are represented in the Greater Boston population. Our venues include main and branch libraries, homeless shelters, senior centers, detention centers, community centers, teen health centers, art centers, Boys & Girls Clubs, and YMCAs.

Film Talks has been recognized in 2002 and again in 2005 as a “gold star” program by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, chosen from thousands of projects funded by Local Cultural Council throughout the state.

Planning a Program -
On this website are brief synopses of the Film Talks’ films and biographies of the participating filmmakers. The participants are skilled presenters, able to tailor their presentations to specific venues’ needs, whether by showing a film in its entirety or showing excerpts of films and by the focus and level of the discussions. The filmmakers bring their own personal experiences and filmmaking challenges to their presentations.

Some films are not appropriate for certain youth audiences. We ask the audience members, the teacher/moderator, and the filmmaker to fill out evaluation forms after their presentation, which help us gauge the success of each individual presentation and the program as a whole.

Fees are charged on sliding scale basis.

Grants and individual donations enable us to bring this program free to underserved venues.

Film Talks is supported in part by the Massachusetts Cultural Council. A donation was also provided by the Newton South High School Film Festival.
