Tom Luckey is coping with recent and dramatic changes in his life: overnight, he went from able-bodied to a wheelchair. A sculptor with an out-sized personality, Tom was designing a three-story-tall climbable sculpture, the masterpiece of his career building interactive art, when he fell through a window and became completely paralyzed. His family rallies around him to enable him, but find themselves crossing delicate lines drawn long ago by divorce and remarriage. With Tom’s ego and wacky personality in tact, the Luckeys lives become a roller coaster ride in the year after Tom’s accident as they negotiate the unfamiliar territory of paralysis. Through moments of sadness, discovery, and hilarity the Luckey family re-structures itself as the sculpture is built. LUCKEY is a portrait of a family of creative types in crisis and one man’s efforts to re-build in the wake of a life-altering accident.

LUCKEY’s world premiere was at IDFA (International Documentary Festival Amsterdam) in November 2008. The North American premiere was at SXSW in March 2009. LUCKEY’s New England premiere took place at IFFBoston in April 2009. LUCKEY had it’s national broadcast on the Sundance Channel in October 2009.
