Dream Deferred is a 30–minute documentary about three high school students who are fighting to gain access to a college education. They are like any other American youth in their dreams and aspirations. However, because these students are undocumented ‘”illegal” immigrants, they do not qualify for federal financial assistance or in–state tuition. Current immigration law also prohibits undocumented students from working legally in the United States, making it even more difficult to afford college. The result is a generation of students who are unable to attend college and for whom a college education is not a part of the “American Dream.” This project will combine community organizing and filmmaking to educate the public about this issue, and to increase the organizing skills of the students who participate. The students will be trained in basic video production and the use of media to communicate ideas and support community organizing initiatives.
