Kim Smith is an award winning landscape designer, documentary filmmaker, photographer, author, and illustrator. She specializes in creating butterfly and habitat gardens utilizing primarily North American wildflowers, native trees, shrubs, and vines. Kim’s lecture programs are developed from her landscape design work and documentary nature films.
Kim Smith Designs is her landscape design firm. In conjunction with Cambridge Seven Associates architectural firm, she designed the award-winning Gloucester HarborWalk butterfly gardens. In 2009 her book on landscape design, which she wrote and illustrated, was published by David R. Godine, Boston.
Kim’s film Beauty on the Wing: Life Story of the Monarch Butterfly, which is in the post-production, will premiere in 2016. In 2014 she created the short film A Flight of Monarchs for the Berkshire Museum. Her film Life Story of the Black Swallowtail Butterfly premiered in 2013.
Kim is currently documenting how Gloucester’s Sicilian American community celebrates the Feast of Saint Joseph and Saint Peter’s Fiesta. For several years she has been filming the life story of a rare and extraordinary swan, which she is currently editing.
