History & Mission

Filmmakers Collaborative’s mission is to sponsor and support independent media projects, to offer educational and networking opportunities to a wide range of media makers, and to use media to educate the public about relevant issues and the filmmaking process.

susan-head-scarf-side.jpgFC is committed to the production of films that address social justice, cultural, racial, historical, global, and artistic issues that reflect the diversity of the community and world around us (see Our Films). Our filmmaker-members‘ work includes documentaries, narrative, animation, and experimental film. FC is devoted to honesty and excellence in filmmaking, in both content and form and has gained a strong reputation for fiscal and artistic integrity.

ar04.jpgWe have sponsored more than 60 projects and have administered over $7 million in grants from such national funders as the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), and the Ford Foundation, as well as local funders such as the Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities, the LEF Foundation and others. FC films are frequently featured in festivals and on signature PBS programs such as NOVA, American Experience, and Frontline.

burk_070601-168.JPGFilmmakers Collaborative creates a supportive artistic community for filmmakers who want to share their expertise and assist with each other’s projects and provides an administrative framework to receive grants for filmmakers, allowing them creative autonomy without costly fiscal sponsorship fees. Because of our low fees, our members are able to work independently for a fraction of the overhead costs normally charged, enabling them to produce both smaller, more personal documentaries as well as larger specials for national public television.

burk_070601-230.JPGFilmmakers Collaborative serves filmmakers and industry professionals throughout New England with Making Media Now, a daylong conference complete with seminars, panels, special industry guests, a trade show, and networking opportunities.

Film Talks connects the public, especially underserved members of the community, with filmmakers and their work, offering opportunities to explore relevant issues raised in a diverse range of films and to learn about the filmmaking process.
